당대 중국 최고의 명승이 비명에 죽은 원귀를 다음 세계로 환생할 수있도록 강마경을 번역했으나 출판키 위해 낙양에 유인칭을 초청한다. 노승은 유인칭이 떠나기 앞서 돌아가는 길에 원귀들의 습격을 염려하여 마력을 지닌 염주를 준다. 유인칭은 귀로에 아름다운 악낭을 만나 결혼하게 된다. 유인칭이 주위에 사람들로 부터 의심을 느낄때 주막집딸 의운을 알게 된다. 유인칭과 의운이 뜻밖의 하루밤을 지나게 되자 악낭은 유인칭을 가두고 의운을 죽이러 간다. 그러나 의운은 유인칭을 구한다. 의운과 악낭은 한 지방사령관의 내시로 원귀라 한다. 악낭은 강마경이 완성되면 악용하려하고 있었다. 의운은 유인칭을 도와 악낭을 얼싸안아 염주를 던지게 하여 환생의 희망을 포기한채 연기로 변해 사라진다.

대사찰 "삼보사" 주지스님인 지암선사는 90고령으로 자기 임종이 다가왔음을 알고 수제자인 혜동, 혜문, 혜사스님 중에서 계승시키려고 각계 시주들에게 통보하여 종정회의를 열어 결정하기로 한다. 대사찰인 삼보사 장경각에는 국보 같은 책 한 권이 있는데 현장법사가 쓰신 "대승기신론" 이란 귀한 보물책자였다. "대승기신론"을 손에 넣으려고 계략과 사건이 속출한다. 이 무렵 억울한 누명으로 유배된 구명이라는 젊은이를 구해내어 심중을 보매 불도에 귀화한지는 얼마 안 되었으나 선과인의 참됨을 보고 혜명이란 법명을 부여하여 삼보사 주지로 계승시킨다. 주지로 계승된 혜명스님은 중생들이 탐하였던 법전 "대승기신론"을 촛불에 태우며 법전의 가치는 그 문맥의 가르침에 있는 것, 읽혀 배우는데 의가 있다는 말을 남긴다.

Directed by some of most well known Chinese-language directors of the time, the portmanteau film Four Moods was an attempt to alleviate Li Han-hsiang’s financial troubles during the late 1960s. Arguably one of his best works, King Hu’s short Anger is an adaptation of the famous Peking opera San Cha Kou; set to opera instrumentation and stylishly shot, the film deftly captures the tense showdown between political schemers, avengers and vagabonds inside an inn. Li Han-hsiang’s Happiness, inspired by the Strange Tales of Liaozhai, tells a tale of reprieve for a kind-hearted ghost, while Pai Ching-Jui’s Joy and Lee Hsing’s Sadness both explore the fateful encounters between mortal men and ghostly women.

Yang buys a painting of fox fairy. When he faces the painting and calls "Qing Mei", a fox fairy will get out the painting and stay together with Yang. Yang's parents invite a Taoist to catch the fox, but a vampire appears to kill the Taoist's assistant and seduce Yang. The fox fairy fights the vampire to protect Yang.

정치적으로 어지러웠던 명나라 말기, 벼슬에 뜻이 없는 선비 고성제는 초야에 묻혀 다른 이들의 초상화를 그려 주며 살고 있다. 그는 어느 날 우연히 폐가에 살고 있는 양낭자를 만나고 아름다운 그녀를 사랑하게 된다. 양낭자는 과거 충신의 후손으로 아버지가 역적으로 몰려 죽은 뒤에 가족들을 몰살하려는 조정의 무사들을 피해 도망 다니고 있는 중이다. 고성제는 양낭자 일행과 합류한 뒤 병법에서 응용한 여러 가지 계략을 세워 이들을 돕게 된다.
