인력거인으로 '불사신 마츠', '무호마츠'로 불리우던 마츠고로(미후네 토시로)가 오랜만에 고향인 오쿠라에 돌아왔다. 노일 전쟁의 승리에 열광하던 즈음, 나무에서 떨어져 다리를 다친 소년 토시오를 구한 것이 연이 되어 마츠고로는 소년의 아버지 요시오카 대위(아쿠다가와 히로시)의 집에 드나들게 된다. 대위는 무지하긴 하지만 호탕하고 너그러운 마츠고로를 신뢰한다. 대위가 가족을 마츠고로에게 부탁하고 죽자 마츠고로는 일심으로 토시오와 미망인(다카미네 히데코)에게 전력을 다한다. 고교 진학을 위해 토시오가 오쿠라를 떠나자 마츠고로는 눈에 띄게 늙고 술에 빠지게 된다. 어느 여름 기온 축제의 날 귀성한 토시오를 위해 마츠고로는 기쁜 나머지 축제 수레 위에 올라가 일생 일대의 기온의 북을 친다. 몇일 후 요시오카 부인 앞에서 마츠고로는 '전 마음이 더러워요!' 라고 오랫동안 키워왔던 부인을 향한 사모의 마음을 고백하고 운다. 어느 눈이 내리는 날, 교정의 한 켠에 미소를 머금은 채 마츠고로의 사체가 발견된다. 남겨진 짐 속에는 요시오카 집에서 받은 축하 선물과 모자 명의의 저금 통장이 있었다. Masahiko Koseki, a judo master, gets in several fights as a result of protecting a young woman. Despite his success, Koseki is expelled from his judo school because of his propensity for street fighting. He goes to work for a gangster named Joji, but when he realizes that Joji is mixed up in the slave trade, Koseki helps the police in their attempts to foil Joji.

A narcotics investigator for the harbor police, Eiichi Tsuda, is driven by thoughts of vengeance for the overdose death of his brother and the subsequent decline and death of their mother. Tsuda acts viciously and with disdain for legal niceties in his exploration of the criminal facts behind the explosion of a freighter in the harbor. He goes undercover with a band of drug smugglers, but his methods threaten to destroy him as well as his case.

Set at the end of World War II and after Japan's defeat, it is a melodrama about a man and a woman at the mercy of war. Wataru is entrusted by his best friend who has gone off to war with his sister Reiko to marry her, but he is not ready to abandon his love for Kumiko, a nurse at his mother's hospital.
