파키스탄 이민자 2세대 쿠마일은 로스쿨 진학을 원하는 보수적인 부모님을 등지고 코미디언으로 성공하기 위해 고군분투 중이다. 직업 선택은 양보해도 배우자 선택만은 물러설 수 없는 쿠마일의 부모는 틈만 나면 파키스탄 여성과의 만남을 주선하고, 그는 가족의 화목과 파키스탄의 전통을 존중하기에 이를 따른다.
그러던 어느 날, 쿠마일은 자유분방하고 사랑스러운 백인 여성 에밀리에게 한눈에 반하고 사랑에 빠진다. 둘의 관계는 점점 깊어지지만, 쿠마일은 여전히 부모 뜻을 거스르지 못하고 에밀리에게 자신의 딜레마를 털어놓지 못한다.
