12월 31일, 행크(빌 팩스톤)는 제이콥(빌리 밥 쏜톤 분), 루(브렌트 브리스코 분)와 함께 눈 덮인 산속을 헤매다 추락한 비행기를 발견하고, 거기서 정체불명의 현금 4백 4십만 달러 또한 발견한다. 주변에는 아무 것도 없고 술주정뱅이 제이콥과 백수건달 루는 이 돈이 자신들의 비참한 생활을 마감하게 해 줄 것이란 생각에 눈이 번쩍 뜨인다. 임신한 아내 사라(브리짓 폰다)와 행복한 가정이 있는 행크는 그들에게 경찰에 신고하자고 주장하지만 전혀 먹히지 않는다. 결국 돈에 대한 사건이 밝혀지고 일단락될 때까지 돈은 행크가 그대로 보관하기로 하고 이후 나눠갖기로 한다. 하지만 제이콥과 루는 행크가 가로챌지도 모른다는 불안에 휩싸인다. 또한 다소 어리버리한 두 사람은 의심받기 딱 좋을만한 어처구니없는 상황들을 시종일관 연출하여 행크의 간담을 서늘하게 한다. 행크와 그의 아내 사라는 그 돈이 형제 납치범에 의해 자행된 납치 사건의 몸값이며, 죽은 조종사가 바로 그 중 한 명임을 알게 된다. 돈의 배분만 손꼽아 기다리며 갈등을 거듭하던 그들 앞에 FBI 요원 백스터(게리 콜)가 추락현장을 조사하러 파견된다.

죽음의 책에 의해 하늘로 끌려들어간 애쉬는 13세기의 어느 영지에 떨어지게 되고, 그곳 성주인 아더에게 포로로 잡힌다. 성주에게 적으로 오해받고 죽음의 구덩이에 떨어지지만 구덩이 속의 괴물을 해치운 애쉬는 자신이 살던 현대로 돌아가기 위해 죽음의 책이 필요하다는걸 듣고 책을 찾아 나선다.

A turf war has been raging in Oldtown for generations. On one side, The Syndicate - an evil gang of crank-head misfits, who has been set on muscling the San Diego family out of the parcel of land they own in the center of town. With their neighborhood becoming increasingly fearful, The Syndicate puts into action another evil advance on their family's fading legacy by kidnapping Salsa - all hell breaks loose. The twins and their best friend Chuck Hank must decide whether to hand over the deed to their families land in order to save their sister or fight, the final fight!
