파란 눈에 무척이나 선량해 보이는 잭은 실은 악당의 빛독촉에 시달리는불쌍한 청년. 발명왕을 꿈꾸는 잭은 발명에 소요되는 자금을 빌려다 쓰고 갚을 길이 막막하다.
무지막지한 고리대금없자 스튜어드(Stuart: 리차드 브라이트 분)의 독촉과 협박에 시달리던 잭은 은행을 털기로 한다. 데비(Debbie Wylder: 올리비아 뉴튼-존 분)란 여행원의 접수창구로 가서 14,464달러를 정신없이 털어 집으로 돌아온 잭, 그러나 가방에 든건 돈이 아닌 종이쪽지였다. 잭 대신 돈을 챙긴 데비는 은행을 그만두고 연극배우가 되기 위해 오디션을 받는 등 호화롭게 생활한다.
이 사실을 안 잭은 데비를 쫓고, 악당은 잭을 쫓게 되는데...
