셜록 홈즈(마이클 케인)과 그의 파트너 왓슨(벤 킹슬리)는 영국의 범죄를 해결하는 최고의 명콤비다. 홈즈는 천재적인 탐정이며 왓슨은 그의 듬직한 조수로 세상의 찬사를 받고 있다. 그러나 이것은 모두 거짓에 불과하다. 진짜 수사를 진행하고 추리를 하는 것은 왓슨이며 사람들 앞에 나서서 천재인 척 하는 홈즈는 왓슨이 고용한 주정뱅이 배우인 것이다. 사실 왓슨은 전도유망한 학자였으나 호기심에 사건 수사를 했다가 학계에 발붙일 곳이 없어지고 재미삼아 쓰는 탐정소설마저 큰 인기를 끌자 얼굴마담 격인 홈즈를 고용하고 뒤에서 모든 일을 조종하고 있는 것이다. 하지만 주목 받기 좋아하고 여자 좋아하는 홈즈는 사고를 몰고 다니고 왓슨은 인기가 많은 홈즈를 질투한다. 결국 참다못한 왓슨은 홈즈를 해고하지만 밀려드는 사건 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 다시 홈즈를 고용한다. 조폐국 직원과 지폐 원판이 사라지는 사건을 수사하다가 왓슨은 절벽에서 떨어져 죽고 홈즈는 사건을 빨리 해결하라는 경시청의 압박을 받으면서 진짜 탐정인 왓슨이 어떤 존재였는지 절감하게 되는데...
