19세기 인도 사티푸르, 더글러스 리버스(크리스토퍼 카제노브)는 그의 아내 올리비아(그레타 스카치)가 더 이상 병원에 있지 않아도 된다는 얘기를 듣는다. 아내에 대한 얘기를 듣고는 리버스는 눈물을 흘린다. 그리고 시간이 흘러 1982년 사티푸르, 올리비아의 손녀인 앤(줄리 크리스티)은 한 남자로부터 올리비아에 대한 얘기를 전해 듣는다. 그렇게 앤은 인도에 도착해서 올리비아의 행적을 추적하게 된다. 그리고 다시 영화는 19세기로 넘어가고 인도의 중요한 행사에 초대된 올리비아를 보여준다. 올리비아는 남편과 함께 당시 인도 영국인 상류사회의 모임에 참석해 많은 얘기를 나누게 된다. 그 모임에서 여러 다른 부인들과도 만나지만 그런 것에는 별 관심이 없다. 그러면서 알게 된 인도의 지배자 나와브(샤시 카푸르)와 함께 나들이를 떠나기도 한다. 나와브와 그 하수인들과 함께 게임을 하면서 즐거이 시간을 보낸다. 그러니까 그 영국인 상류사회로부터는 한 발짝 비껴난 인물이다. 다시 현재로 돌아오면 한 인도 남자와 함께 올리비아를 연구하던 앤이, 당시 나와브과 사랑에 빠졌던 올리비아의 전철을 그대로 밟게 되는 것을 보게 된다. 그렇게 앤은 당시 온갖 스캔들의 주인공이었던 올리비아의 길을 따르면서 자신의 삶을 반추하게 된다.

영국의 전형적인 서민 공동 주택인 플랫에 살고 있는 윌슨은 어느 날 잠을 못 이루며 괴로워하게 된다. 그는 아파트를 돌아다니며 방문을 두드려 아파트에 살고 있는 다른 사람들을 깨운다. 윌슨은 몹시 불안하고 두려워보였지만 사람들은 이런 윌슨을 이해하지 못하고 모두들 그를 이상한 사람으로 생각한다. 잠을 못이루고 돌아 다니는 윌슨을 이상하게 생각한 호기심 많은 폴린은 윌슨에게 말을 걸다가 그에게 떠밀려 넘어지면서 가볍게 상처를 입는다. 이에 격분한 폴린은 아파트의 다른 사람들을 찾아가 윌슨을 내쫓아야 한다고 선동을 하고, 아파트 주인을 찾아가 이 사실을 알린다. 또한 분을 이기지 못한 폴린이 경찰에 신고를 함으로써 사건은 크게 번진다. 폴린은 신고를 받고 찾아온 경찰이 윌슨을 조사하려고 다가가는 순간, 윌슨이 경찰을 떠밀어 계단에서 굴러 떨어진 사건이 발생한 것이다. 경찰과 소방대가 출동하고 구경꾼이 모여들지만 윌슨은 자신의 방문을 굳게 걸어잠근 채 방문을 열려고 하지 않는다.

Mark Loring is madly jealous of his wife, Mary, former American cabaret singer. Due to an automobile accident, she loses her unborn child, and Mark becomes sterile. His father, Brit-stuffy Sir John Loring, has never approved of the marriage and, again, tries to break it up. Believing that a child will hold the marriage together, Mary suggests artificial insemination to Mark, who finally agrees to accompany her to a clinic in Switzerland. However, when she is again pregnant, Mark finds it impossible to reconcile himself to the situation and leaves her. Prompted by his father, Mark sues for divorce, accusing her of adultery. She contests the divorce and a trial concerns itself with whether or not artificial insemination is a question of adultery. The Catholic Church's National League of Decency placed this film on its Condemned" list.
