평범한 삶을 사는 보통 사람들의 삶이 무시무시한 핵폭발로 인해 영원히 변화되어 가는 모습을 보여준다. 외과의사인 러셀 오커스는 핵 공격 후 그의 가족들의 소식도 모른채 살아남은 사람들의 상처를 치료해 주고 농부인 짐달 버그와 그의 가족은 딸의 결혼식을 준비하다 핵공격을 당하게 된다.
한방 친구였던 메리와 리즈는 졸업과 더불어 각자의 인생을 살아가게 된다. 10년 후, 평범한 가정주부로서 살아가고 있던 메리는 소설가로서 성공한 리즈를 보면서 묘한 질투감을 느끼게 되고 주부로서의 삶에 만족할 수 없게 된다. 뒤늦게 3류 잡지에 글을 쓰면서 메리는 그 방면으로 성공하게 되지만 남편은 일만 아는 아내로 변한 메리를 버리고 가버린다. 리즈는 지적인 소설가로서 명성은 얻었으나 독신의 고독감 속에 묻혀서 지내는데, 어느날 기자가 리즈를 인터뷰하기 위해 찾아온다. 리즈는 그를 통해 결혼에 대해서 다시 생각하게 되지만.
The life of young newlywed, Fern O'Neil, is turned upside-down when her husband is called home to visit his dying father in Ireland. When she fails to receive a phone call from her husband, she contacts the airline and discovers he was not on the plane. Further investigation reveals that her husband is not who she thought he was. Her search ultimately takes her all the way to Ireland, where her sanity and, of course, her story come into question.
In a badly-overpopulated future, where each couple is only allowed one child and where people over 65 are forbidden medical care under a very draconian set of laws, a young couple, pregnant with their second child (the first died shortly after birth) enlist the help of an elderly former US Senator to help them escape to Canada.
