영국에 유학해 변호사 자격을 딴 간디(벤 킹슬리)는 1893년 남아프리카에 가 소송사건을 맡는다. 간디는 그 곳에서 유색인종에 대한 차별대우를 받게 된다. 이를 계기로 그는 남아프리카의 인도 거류민을 돕기 위한 다양한 활동을 시작한다. 이후 1915년, 간디는 인도로 돌아와 인도독립을 위한 노력을 하게 된다. 그는 비폭력운동을 주도하면서 수차례 투옥되기도 한다. 인도는 마침내 1947년 8월 영국으로부터 독립을 이룬다. 그러나 힌두교와 이슬람교의 종교적 대립으로 인해 인도와 파키스탄으로 나뉘어 독립을 하게 된다. 이후에도 종교분쟁을 해결하기 위해 노력했던 간디는 1948년 1월 과격파 힌두교도가 쏜 총탄에 암살당한다.

Director Shah Krishna compiled this compelling documentary of Indian cinema after spending two years searching through film archives from all over the world. Included are films from the turn of the 20th century through the 1970s to illustrate various schools of filmmaking and the historical progression of the art form.

Ek Adhuri Kahani is 1972 Hindi language movie directed by Mrinal Sen, starring Utpal Dutt, Shekhar Chatterjee, Vivek Chatterjee, Aarti Bhattacharya, Shyam and Shobha Sen. It was based on a Bengali story, Gotrantar by Subodh Ghosh.

인도가 영국으로부터 갓 독립한 1940년대 말. 철도 고위 공무원인 부밴 숌은 식민 시대에 영국풍 교육을 받고 자란 전형적인 엘리트다. 고집불통에 근엄하고 거만한 성격으로 인해 가족도 모두 떠나고 그는 외로운 말년을 보내고 있다. 숌은 휴가를 위해 찾은 한 시골 마을에서 우연히 가우리란 여자를 만난다. 그런데 알고 보니 가우리는 뇌물을 받은 혐의로 해고하려 했던 부하 직원의 아내였다. 그녀와 오리 사냥을 함께 다니며 시골 마을에 점차 동화되고 가우리에게도 마음을 열게 되는 숌. 그러나 휴가를 마치고 직장으로 돌아와 그가 내린 결정은 의외의 결과를 낳고 만다.

An experimental film by Pramod Pati that presents to us a sensory collage of icons, symbols and the every-day. Exploring the mood and ambitions of youth at the time, the film eschews narrative and commentary to present the excitement and expectations of its participants.

Those born on Independence Day in 1947 were selected from different parts of India and interviewed to know their hopes and desires,ambitions, hobbies, fears and frustrations and the result is this unique film.
