미식 축구를 사랑하는 죠(Joe Pendleton/Leo Farnsworth/Tom Jarrett: 워렌 비티 분)는 외롭고 힘겨운 훈련을 하며 살아간다. 축구의 꿈을 이루어 가려던 죠는 갑작스런 교통사고로 하늘나라로 불리워 간다. 천국위 사도를 만난 죠는 천국으로 가길 거부하고 다시 현세로 내려오나, 자신의 몸이 가루가 되어 뿌려졌기에 다른 사람의 몸을 빌려 삶을 연장할 수 있게 된다. 억만장자의 몸으로 다시 환생한 죠는 귀족 생활방식에 맞춰 살아가고, 아내와 비서의 살인 음모를 알면서도 오직 미식 축구팀에만 관심을 집중한다. 미식축구팀을 만들어 열심히 살고 또한 로건(Betty Logan: 줄리 크리스티 분)과 결혼하려는 죠에게 천국의 사도가 찾아와 생명이 다 끝나간다는 걸 통보해 준다. 결국 총에 맡고 죽는 죠는 다시 천국으로 올라가지만.

A U.S. Senator is spirited away to a secret New Mexico medical lab after a serious car crash. His injuries are completely healed by a secret organization that has developed advanced medical technology. What does the organization want in exchange for saving his life? Meanwhile, a reporter who witnessed the accident decides to investigate the senator's disappearance.

Hughie Mack, a not so nice western singer, is discovered by Clover Doyle as the next movie cowboy hero. His name is changed to Slim Carter and a promotional buildup begins. Leo Gallaher, an orphan boy wins the contest to spend a month with Slim. Leo is a good influence on his cowboy hero. Clover sees the good and more in Slim. Montana Burriss is Slim's double.
