중년의 짐 블로그는 핵전쟁의 위기에 곤란을 겪지만. 그의 아내 힐다는 집안일이 너무 바빠 이에 신경 쓸 틈이 없다. 핵전쟁 시 대처방법에 대한 팜플렛을 가지고 집에 온 짐은 거실에 대피소를 만든다. 그리고 핵폭발이 일어나 짐과 힐다는 대피소로 피신한다. 그러나 대피소를 나온 그들이 마주한 것은 급변한 세상이다. 처음엔 그저 우유와 신문이 언제 다시 배달될까를 궁금해하고 차를 끓일 전력이 없다는 것을 아는 정도였지만, 곧 참상이 그보다 더 심각하다는 것을 깨닫게 된다.
