한때 주목받는 신인작가였던 수연은 생계를 위해 흥행영화감독인 모재원의 보조작가 일을 하고 있다. 되풀이되는 이야기와 틀에 박힌 캐릭터를 만들어내면서도 이것이 언제나 ‘새로운 시도’이며 ‘현실’이라 포장하는 재원의 작업은 수연뿐만 아니라 재원마저도 피로감을 느끼게 한다. 구질구질한 현실을 뛰어넘을 수 있는 소설을 꿈꾸던 수연은 조심스럽게 캐릭터의 해방을 꿈꾸어 보지만 힘겨운 현실 속에서 수연의 야망은 허영에 불과한 것임을 깨닫게 된다.
