세계 3대 영화제란 명성에 걸맞게 그야말로 걸출한 작품들로 채워지는 베니스 영화제. 2003년 베니스 영화제는 특히 유럽 인기감독들의 작품이 몰리는 영화제이기도 했다. 그런 베니스 영화제에서 신인감독이 자신의 첫 번째 영화를 들고 온다는 것은 참가 그 자체만으로도 영광일 터. 게다가 ‘타라코프스키’로 대표되는 러시아 영화에 대한 ‘어렵다’는 인식 때문에 1990년대 이후 러시아 영화는 여느 시상식에서든, 관객들에게든 외면을 받아온 것이 사실이다. 그러나 "리턴"은 감독뿐만 아니라 연기자, 스탭, 제작사까지 영화 경험이 거의 없는 신인들임에도 불구하고 전문가, 평론가, 관객 대부분의 예상을 뒤엎으며 "21그램", "사랑도 통역이 되나요?", "자토이치", "바람난 가족" 등 쟁쟁한 영화들을 제치고 베니스영화제 황금사자상 등 5개 부문을 석권했다. 말 그대로 2003년 베니스영화제 최대의 이변이자, 최고의 화제를 몰고 온 영화인 것이다. 베니스영화제측은 "리턴"을 “그 어느 나라에서도 누구나 공감 할 수 있는 이야기이다.” 라고 평가했다. 이렇듯 "리턴"은 ‘어렵다’라는 러시아 영화에 대한 인식을 ‘아름답고, 재미있다.’로 바꿔버린 최고의 영화다.

A young Christian boy attends a druid worship that is attacked by invading Irish tribes. Taken captive, he is taken back to Ireland to become a slave. Enduring many hardships, he finds comfort and eventually salvation in his faith. After several years, he escapes back to England, where he joins a convent to prove his faith. His greatest desire is to return to Ireland to convert the Irish to Christianity. Years later, he is given the opportunity. Upon setting foot on the Irish soil, all snakes are aitomatically driven from the land. He then overcomes many obstacles, including disagreements with the British Cardinal (Malcolm McDowell), to fulfill his destiny and ultimately being given Sainthood.

It's death-by-fear (aka scared-to-death) in this deceptively psychological thriller. The hero, Mike brings his friends to his grandparents' house for a Halloween party wherein they will all dress up as their innermost fears. Mike's fear is that he's inherited a homicidal legacy from his father. Mike's father was a serial killer who murdered his mother right in front of him when Mike was five before committing suicide. Mike's fear manifests itself in his inability to commit to his girlfriend of 4 1/2 years, Peg for fear that he will kill her too. Everything gets rolling when an ancient Indian totem wooden figure named Morty comes to life and starts killing off Mike's friends by making their worst fears come true. The ultimate confrontation comes when Mike has to face his greatest fear - his own father.
