오델로는 전쟁에서 뛰어난 공을 세워 많은 존경을 받는다. 그는 젊은 귀족 숙녀인 데스데모나와 사랑에 빠졌고, 그녀 또한 오델로의 성품에 반해 그를 흠모한다. 하지만 데스데모나의 아버지는 오델로가 무어인이라는 이유로 두 사람의 결합을 반대했고, 결국 두 사람은 한밤중에 도망을 쳐 비밀리에 결혼식을 올린다. 이 사실을 안 데스데모나의 아버지는 오델로를 원로회에 연행해 오지만 때마침 터키군이 사이프러스를 침공해오자 원로 위원들은 오셀로를 장군으로 임명, 전쟁에 파견한다. 오셀로는 터키와의 전쟁에서 큰 승리를 거두고 돌아온다. 한편 오델로의 부하, 이아고는 오델로의 신임을 한 몸에 받고 있지만 사실은 그를 질투하고 시기하여 오델로를 궁지에 빠드릴 궁리만 한다. 그러던 중, 이아고는 오델로의 부관인 젊은 캐시오와 데스데모나의 관계를 모략할 음모를 꾸미는데...
