케이프 타운. 예술 학교를 다니며 친구들과 춤을 추는 멀리아(캐시)는 학교측으로 부터 수업료를 납부하지 않으면 수업을 들을 수 없다는 통보를 받게 된다. 돌아가신 어머니를 위해 '로미오와 줄리엣'을 졸업 작품으로 올리겠다는 다짐을 한 멀리아로서는 학교측의 통보가 당황스럽다. 하는 수 없이 학비를 벌기 위해 일자리를 알아보러 다니는 멀리아. 여기저기서 힙합 안무가는 거절을 하고, 궁여지책으로 그녀는 동네의 한 소극장을 찾아 자신이 일할 곳이 없는지를 물어본다. 그러던 차에 소극장이 문을 닫게 되어 비어있다는 것을 알게된 멀리아는 친구들과 '로미오와 줄리엣' 공연을 열어 학비를 벌기로 결심한다. 남자친구 에릭(케니 워말드)의 도움으로 계획은 점점 탄력을 받는 받지만, 라이벌 이샤니(시본길 믈람보)의 곱지 않은 시선은 그녀를 점점 더 힘들게만 한다. 설상가상으로 유명 뮤지션 타지와의 스캔들은 남자친구와의 오해까지 만들면서 멀리아의 계획은 점점 난항을 겪게 되는데...
