마라톤이 유일한 취미인 베이브(더스틴 호프만)는 어렸을 때 아버지의 자살 장면을 목격하게 되어 충격을 받고는 성격이 내성적으로 변한다. 그는 어느날 도서관에서 프랑스 여인 엘자(마티 켈러)를 만나 사랑에 빠지게 되는데, 이 때부터 지극히 평범했던 베이브의 일상 속에 예기치 못한 사건들이 발생한다. 베이브는 괴한들로부터 납치되어 심한 고문을 당하지만 친구의 도움으로 구출된다. 또한 그를 고문한 범인은 과거 유태인 수용소의 고문 담당자였던 악명 높은 스젤임을 밝혀내며, 이 나치 전범을 찾아나서게 된다. 결국 내성적인 베이브는 성격마저 변화하면서 사건의 전모를 밝혀 내는데...

예일 대학을 우등으로 졸업한 청년 토드는 헐리우드에서 성공하려는 원대한 야망을 품고 캘리포니아로 온다. 그가 세를 얻은 낡은 아파트는 어릿 광대 출신인 해리 그레너와 스타에의 꿈을 키우고 있는 아름다운 딸 훼이 그리너가 살고 있다. 토드는 첫 눈에 훼이에게 끌리지만 엑스트라 일을 하며 가난과 싸우는 훼이는 그를 거들떠 보지도 않는다. 훼이는 아버지 해리가 죽자 장례 비용을 위해 고급 창녀로 전락하지만 토드의 설득으로 곧 빠져나온다. 그녀는 돈 많고 소심한 중년 남자 호머 심슨과 동거하지만 그를 위도적으로 학대하고 방탕한 생활에 빠진다. 불우한 어린 시절을 보내고 훼이에게서 위안을 찾던 호머는 결국 그녀가 집을 나가자 정신 이상을 일으킨다. 토드는 이런 어두운 헐리우드의 이면과 냉혹함에 환멸을 느끼게 되고 군중의 일대 혼란 사태가 일어난다.

Tish Gray had a baby and gave it up for adoption. She is contacted by a second childless couple who want her to have the husband's baby because of the wife's inability to have children. She accepts but finds that knowing the parents, and developing a relationship with them for the entire pregnancy complicates the simple arrangement.

대공황으로 돈도 일자리도 안식처도 갖지 못한 미국의 젊은이들은 지친 삶의 돌파구를 찾아 마라톤 댄스 경연 대회를 찾는다. 당시 선풍적인 인기를 모았던 이 대회는 쉬지 않고 춤을 추는 대회인데 끝까지 버티는 사람에게 1,500달러의 상금과 그밖의 공황으로 얻기 힘든 모든 것들을 부상으로 주는 대회였다. 그래서 이 대회에서 승리하는 것은 바로 공황의 그늘에서 벗어나 새로운 삶을 꾸릴수 있는 지름길이었다. 하지만 몸에 장애나 질병, 의심받을 만한 나쁜 처신을 한 사람에게는 출전의 기회가 철저하게 봉쇄되어 있기도 하다. 대회의 프로모터인 록키(긱 영)는 비열한 사나이로 돈을 위해선 무슨 짓이든 할 그런 사람이었고, 댄스 대회 표를 많이 팔기 위해 가능한한 모든 수단을 동원한다. 춤으로 몸을 혹사시키는 대회였던 만큼 의사나 의료진이 경기장에 항상 대기하고 있었고, 사람들은 그런 점에 매력을 느껴 댄스 대회를 찾는 것이기도 했다. 로버트(마이클 사라진)와 글로리아(제인 폰다)는 처음부터 한 팀은 아니었지만 대회가 시작되자 서로의 춤 실력을 발견하고 충동적으로 커플을 이루어 대회에 참가하는데..

벨기에 복음선교회 후원의 전도사 자격을 받지못한 빈센트 반 고흐는 결국 오지의 탄광지대의 전도사로 부임을 한다. 그곳에서 그들의 아픔을 이해하며 전도사업을 벌이던 중 검열나온 복음선교위원회의 위원들의 고압적인 관료 의식에 염증을 느끼고 고향으로 돌아간다. 고향에서 다시 미술 작업을 시작한 얼마 뒤 과부가 된 사촌 케이가 찾아오고 그녀를 사랑하게된 고호는 고백을 하지만 완고한 그녀의 고집에 마음의 상처만 얻게 된다. 그러다 만난 술집 여자와 살림을 차리지만 결국 그의 예술생활을 이해하지 못한 그녀로 인해 다시 헤어지게 되고 동생 테오가 있는 파리로 가서 후기 인상파의 화풍을 공부하게 된다. 그러다 고흐는 폴 고갱과 만나게 되고 자신의 화풍을 이해해주는 그와 친하게 된다. 그리고 어느 정도 체계가 잡혀가는 자신의 화풍에 자연의 맑은 기운의 변화를 주고싶은 열망을 가지고 남 프로방스 지방으로 떠난다. 그곳에서 고호는 왕성한 작품 활동을 전개한다. 황금빛 들판과 태양이 작열하는 자연 등과 벗 삼으며 작업을 하던도 중 고갱이 찾아오고 그와 같이 생활을 하는 가운데 작업상의 이견으로 고갱이 떠나던날 자신의 정신적인 강렬함을 이겨내지 못하고 자신의 귀를 잘라버리는데...

At breakfast, Jane announces that she and Ralph are getting married the next week. All Jane and Ralph want is a small wedding with the immediate family and no reception. This is because Jane's parents are poor and Jane and Ralph can borrow a car for their honeymoon. However, at dinner that night all Ralph's parents talk about are the big weddings they gave their daughters and everything escalates. All of a sudden, it is a big wedding breakfast with hundreds of guests. The problem is that for 12 years, Tom has been saving money to buy his own cab and license, but now that he can, all of his money is going towards a wedding neither he, or Jane or Ralph really want.

Destitute, Hazel Farron is offered employment and comfort from bakery owner David Rogers. When Rogers' bakery slips into debt, he collapses from exhaustion and anxiety, forcing Hazel to turn to former admirer Geoffrey Stanhope for financial aid. When Chester's salary as an insurance clerk proves insufficient for the couple's needs, Claire invents a complexion cream called "Angel Bloom." Deciding to combine Chester's oratory prowess with the promotion of Angel Bloom, Floss rents an elephant, coats it with the cream and plans to have Chester pitch the product from the back of the animal.

A young woman goes to visit friends but mistakenly rings at the wrong address. She is greeted and taken in out of the storm by a handsome young man to whom she is immediately attracted. What she does not know, however, is that this young man has been fleeced by her father and has sworn vengeance against him.

A Clarence G. Badger silent cowboy western kidnapping mistaken identity romantic comedy, based on a story by Rex Taylor; about a rich woman who gets lost in the West, and is found by an engineer who she mistakes for an outlaw. tHe plays along because he enjoys it, but then four real outlaws show up, and he tells them he was kidnapping her. They get found out, the girl gets one of the outlaws' guns and rescues them, and of course, they discover they love each other!

Dancer Lucille Le Jambon (whose real name is Lucy Higgins) loses her job when the morals committee of Sycamore, Kansas, headed by the self-righteous Deacon John Griswold, forces the Merry Models Burlesque show to close. Having grown fond of Sycamore, Lucy opens a combined ice cream parlor and dance hall, where she teaches the young people all the latest dances. ...

The Kaiser is playing cards with King Albert of Italy, who loses, but is rescued by Miss Liberty Loan.

Madge Kennedy stars as a young woman of modest means, posing as a millionairess in order to attend a hoity-toity society ball, where she hopes to snare a rich husband. Here she meets handsome young Tom Moore, who is likewise impersonating a man of wealth.

Wealthy Clytie Rogers writes a novel in which a society girl commits a burglary, but it is "roasted" by critic Jimmy Gilpin, who writes that her story is completely implausible. To prove him wrong, Clytie decides to feign a robbery and enters an apartment through an open window. She is apprehended by a policeman, who mistakes her for local robber "Powder Nose Annie." Gilpin sees her in jail and, posing as crook Jimmy of the Dives, arranges to break her out and take her on a robbing spree. Finally, Jimmy returns her to her parents and then calls at her home as Gilpin, the critic. Clytie is suprised but forgives the deception and agrees to marry him.

Silent comedy, based on a 1913 stage play of the same title.
