어느 한적한 시골마을, 마을에는 사람의 목을 잘라 그 피를 제물로 바치면 평화를 지켜주는 구덩이가 있다. 구덩이에 제물로 바칠 피는 마을의 도자기 장인 '다와이'가 빚은 얼굴모양의 도자기와 닮은 사람의 목을 잘라 구해야 한다. 하지만 이번에 마을의 제물로 바쳐질 사람은 임신한 지 2주차 밖에 안된 '에이다'. 그녀는 자신의 뱃속의 아기를 지키기 위해 자신의 얼굴이 빚어진 도자기를 숨긴다. 그리고 며칠 뒤 마을사람들이 그녀 대신에 의문의 사고로 죽어가게 되고, 이 사건이 자신의 탓을 알게된 '에이다'는 마을에서 도망치게 되는데... 과연 '에이다'는 마을의 저주에서 벗어날 수 있을까?

낯선 세계의 기묘한 노인 무리를 찍은 이 작품은, 이들의 가학적이고 원초적인 행동들을 여과 없이 보여준다. 수시로 등장하는 방뇨·자위·반달리즘 등 도덕성의 한계를 넘어선 행위들을 이해하긴 쉽지 않으나, 마치 로우파이 비디오테이프 같은 느낌의 화면을 따라가다 보면 이들이 그들만의 세상에서 그들만의 유희를 즐기고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그 유희를 관찰하는 감독의 시선은, 사진작가 다이안 아버스가 피사체를 바라보던 시선과 닮았다.
