This is a tale that has an epic scope in scenery "the northern snow-covered lands of coastal Norway" and is dramatized by moments of tumultuous stormy weather. But the focus is on Heikki (Stein Bjorn) a young man who is inspired by the northern lights to take a horse-drawn sled and make his way to the sea, hoping to come back with abundant fish. He is overtaken by a snowstorm and is forced to find shelter in a small, isolated cabin that is home to a half-crazy widow, her baby, and a blind man. Driven to arson by her internal demons, the woman destroys the cabin. She and the blind man perish, but Heikki manages to save the baby. He is now faced with an even greater challenge as he holds the infant and looks in the direction of the coastline.

A man, Jean, is critically injured in a freakish accident. He and Agneta, his partner, must cope with the impact of his injuries and determine a new path for their utterly changed lives.

Three city kids are taken somewhat reluctantly to a farm out in the forests of Sweden. There they meet the resident country kids who's rosy cheeks and youthful antics mirror the apathy and cynicism of the children grown up in the callous and barren streets of the city. In the country, strange and mysterious things are afoot. Sudden fires, cars braking down and enigmatic sightings point to there being more than the modern man fathoms in the woods. People talk of trolls and beings in the woods, guardians of the land, but the grown ups do not believe and the cynical city children say such talk is nonsense.

입원 중인 뉴먼 경감이 깊은밤에 누군가에 의해서 피살되었다. 뉴먼 경감은 일부 자기동료로 부터는 남자다운 경찰관으로서 존경을 받았고 상사로부터의 신뢰도 두터웠다. 그러나 그는 법과 질서를 수행하는데 있어서 시민에 대해서는 공포와 증오의 대상이 되었다. 가정에서는 인자한 남편인 동시에 아버지이기도 한 뉴먼은 권력의 집행자가 되었을때 마치 힘없는 양을 습격하는 늑대가 되어서 범인이외의 사라마에게도 가차없는 처벌을 가했다.
