마을에서 외톨이 취급을 받는 다케시는 중고 물건을 고쳐 되파는 일로 생계를 꾸리며 어머니를 모시고 산다. 어느 날, 마을 근처의 논 한가운데 있는 Y자 모양의 교차로에서 초등학교 학생 아이카가 유괴되는 사건이 발생한다. 아이카의 친구 츠구미는 아이카가 납치되기 불과 몇 분 전까지 함께 있었기 때문에 너무 괴롭고 힘든 입장이다. 12년 후 츠구미는 고등학교를 졸업하고 일을 시작한다. 어느 날 그녀는 마을 축제에서 다케시를 만나서 그의 힘겹고 어려운 처지를 공감하게 된다. 축제가 열린 날, 과거의 그 교차로에서 한 소녀가 실종되고 마을 사람들은 다케시를 의심한다. 절망에 빠진 다케시는 마을로 돌아가 사람들의 접근을 막으려고 집에 불을 지른다. 일 년 후 도쿄에 살고 있는 츠구미는 마을 축제 준비를 도우려고 고향에 돌아와 교차로 너머 고령의 주민들이 사는 지역에 거주하는 홀아비 양봉업자 젠지로를 만나서 마을에 활력을 불어넣을 계획을 세우지만 실패하고, 결과적으로 젠지로는 마을 사람들로부터 배척당한다. 젠지로는 점점 커져만 가는 고립감으로 인해 결국 끔찍한 범죄의 막다른 골목에 도달한다.

조난 산업 야구부의 감독을 맡아 귀신같이 엄격한 지도와 햇빛에 그을린 붉은 얼굴로 붉은 악마 선생님의 별명을 가진 오부치 다카시(츠츠미 신이치)는 고시엔 출전 눈앞까지 야구부를 지도했지만 아쉽게도 이루어지지 못했다. ​ 그로부터 10년 오부치는 50대가 되어 야구에 대한 열정도 쇠약해져 있었다. 어느 날 병원을 찾은 그는 제자였던 사이토 도모유키(야기라 유야)와 재회한다. 그는 야구 감각이 풍부했지만 고등학교를 중퇴한 결혼 가정을 이루고 있는 반면, 말기암으로 수명 반년이라는 사실을 알게 된다.

Depicts the life of best-selling Japanese poet Toyo Shibata. Toyo Shibata first began writing poems at the age of 92 and published her first collection of poems "Kujikenaide" (″Don't lose heart″) in 2009, which sold over 1.5 million copies.

Set in the mid-1970s, the film is based on the true story of Yoshiharu Yamaguchi, a teacher and former Japanese international rugby union player, who turned-around a failing high school in Kyoto, giving special attention to the rugby team, which included the most disruptive students among its members.

A couple years have passed, Matsuzaki is divorced and has a daughter and is still up to his old compulsive gambling, boozing and womanizing even as he stares middle age in the face. At his daughter's school he meets a teacher who's similarily obsessed with horserace betting and who's also frigid - something he does his best to therapize. He also reconnects with his ex-wife, who just so happens to be the literary agent and love interest of another writer of the gambling genre. An epic gambling battle between the two ensues.

He takes over the yakuza group he belongs to, by killing the old boss. When he tries to use 'shabu' as the main finacial resource of his group, it leads to the serious confrontation with another big yakuza syndicate.

When the young Yukie appears to turn the production into an unexpected hit, Ryo becomes drawn to the world of sadomasochism and his newfound star.

A meteor lands in Japan and the fallout creates a “shield” around Tokyo, encasing the city in a foggy darkness. A state of martial law is declared.
