‘게이 목소리’가 있다? 누군가의 목소리를 어떤 사람은 ‘게이’처럼 말한다고 하고 어떤 사람들은 그렇지 않다고 한다. 그러한 게이 목소리는 게이 문화에서 하나의 요소로 있으면서 동시에 게이 혐오와 왜 연관이 깊은 것일까? 새로운 짝을 만나고 싶었던 주인공이자 감독인 데이비드 토프의 우연한 질문에서 이야기는 시작된다.

카메라를 가지고 도망치던 한 남자가 옥상에서 추락사하고, 그의 카메라로 영상을 찍던 주인공은 점차 현실의 모든 것이 혼란스러워진다. 결국 그 역시 카메라를 든 채 빌딩 위에서 추락하고, 다른 남자가 다시 카메라를 빼앗아 달려간다.

Shinichi is not only poor, he is also deaf, and leads a joyless life with his sick mother. His one happiness is his friendship with a girl who works in a bar nearby. Then, one day, his mother dies after drinking the medicine that Shinichi himself gave her. It is discovered that the pills contained poison. He is apprehended on suspicion of murder and taken away for interrogation, unable to defend himself - being deaf and dumb - or even to proclaim his innocence.
Yoshie Nogami, a factory worker by day, moonlights as a hostess at a bar. One of the regulars, Eiji Kitami, invites her out on a date. Still only 19, she goes along out of curiosity and ends up spending the night at a hotel where she gives herself to him. They begin a passionate love affair and move in together, after which Yoshie begins skipping work at the factory and rarely returns to her family home. Before long, Eiji’s demeanor changes and he begins to constantly ask her for money. Despite claiming to be a businessman, he is actually a local thug, and his inability to pay his dues to his gang leads him to force Yoshie into prostitution.

A few days later he loses his job after a run-in with some punks, but is offered a job by a gangster impressed by his fighting skills. He tries to make amends with the girl he ravished, but becomes caught up in the ways of the underworld...

오시마 나기사의 세 번째 장편영화. 오사카 빈민가에서 살아가는 하층민과 그곳을 거점 삼아 싸움을 일삼는 삼류 깡패들의 생활상이 등장한다. 이제 막 깡패 집단에 들어간 순수한 주인공은 거친 세상 속에서 살아남으려 애쓰는 동안 도덕적 방황을 겪는다. 사회를 겨냥한 직접적 발언은 없으나 당시 일본 사회의 음울함을 반영한 것으로 인정받는 작품.
