우연히 스카웃 담당자의 눈에 띄여 프로 야구단에 입단 하게 된 도티(Dottie Hinson: 지나 데이비스 분)와 키트(Kit Keller: 로리 페티 분) 자매. 이들은 같은 록포드팀으로 배속되어 프로 야구에 데뷔하기 위한 갖가지 훈련을 받는다. 선수들은 미니스커트 야구복을 입을 것과 챠밍 스쿨에 다닐 것을 강요하는 구단주의 요구에 불만을 느끼면서도 야구 선수가 됐다는 기쁨에, 설레임과 희열을 안고 의욕적으로 훈련에 임한다. 그러나 록포드팀의 감독 지미 듀간(Jimmy Dugan: 톰 행크스 분)은 선수들을 거들떠 보지도 않고 매일 술만 마신다. 왕년에 홈런왕이었던 그는 무릎 부상으로 야구를 그만 둔 후 폐인이 되다시피한 사람. 감독의 냉대 속에서도 선수들은 열심히 훈련과 경기에 임하고, 처음 냉담한 반응을 보이던 관중들도 점차 여자 야구에 흥미를 갖기 시작한다. 듀간 감독은 선수들의 열성에 감동해 술을 끊고 열과 성을 다해 이들을 지도한다. 포수인 언니 도티가 두각을 나타내자, 질투를 느낀 동생 키트는 사사건건 언니에게 트집을 잡고, 결국 그로 인해 키트는 라이벌 팀인 '라신느 벨스'로 이적이 된다. 월드 시리즈에 진출한 록포드팀은 라신느 벨스와 결승전에서 맞붙게 되는데...
