링컨 라임(덴젤 워싱턴)은 최고의 범죄학자로서 법의학 전문 형사이다. 한편 영리하지만 공격적인 여경관 도나위(안젤리나 졸리)는 가슴 속에 풀리지 않는 상처를 가지고 있는 여자이다. 도나위가 내근직으로 자리를 옮기기로 결정되기 전 날, 인적이 없는 후미진 기차길에서 사지가 절단되어 손만 남기고 흙속에 묻혀 있는 시체와 맞닥뜨리게 된다. 라임의 동료 형사는 이 사건을 대단치 않은 사건으로 결정짓지만 라임은 현장에 남겨진 증거들로 연쇄살인을 예고하는 범죄임을 느낀다. 또 라임은 기차를 세워 사건현장을 잘 보존한 도나위 경관 역시 범죄 현장에 남겨진 단서들에게서 숨겨진 메시지를 보았다는 것을 느끼고 그녀를 파트너로 지목한다. 치밀한 계산으로 라임은 살인자가 남긴 단서를 풀어 납치된 여인을 찾는데는 성공하지만 살인자는 엽기적인 방법으로 그녀를 죽이고 현장에 또다른 단서를 남겨 놓는다. 라임과 도나위는 또다른 살인을 막기위해 범행현장을 쫓아다닌다. 그러나 라임과 도나위를 비웃듯 해결할 수 없는 난해한 실마리만 남기며 살인은 여전히 계속되는데...

A divorcing couple remembers the best years of their lives.

Adapted from the novel by Juan Marse, the film shows two distant worlds in the Spain of the 50's, the suburban and the bourgeois, which are related through two characters, Manolo Reyes, vulgar motorcycle thief who aspires to escape poverty and Teresa Serrat, university student of bourgeois extraction seduced by the revolutionary cause.

Miguel, who escaped from prison two months before finishing his sentence, thinks only of revenge and finding his beloved Diana.
