버터필드(Butterfield: 로버트 엠하드트 분)는 승객들과 함께 마차를 타고 가다가 웨이드(Ben Wade: 글렌 포드 분) 일당을 만나 갖고 있던 금을 빼앗기고 마부는 살해당하고 만다. 아들 매튜(Mathew: 배리 커티스 분), 마크(Mark: 제리 하틀레벤 분)와 함께 소몰이를 나섰던 댄(Dan Evans: 밴 헤플린 분)은 멀리서 이 광경을 목격하지만 돕지 않고 바라보기만 한다. 자신의 말까지 빼앗긴 댄은 아들과 함께 집으로 돌아오고 이 사실을 알게 된 부인 앨리스(Alice Evans: 레오나 다나 분)는 남편이 강도 짓을 하는 걸 보고만 있었다는 사실에 실망한다. 3년째 가뭄이 들어 남아있던 소들의 생명마저 위태로운 상태에서 댄은 마을로 돈을 구하러 떠난다. 한편 웨이드 일당은 마을 보안관을 찾아와 강도 짓을 하는 일당을 목격했다고 말한다. 보안관 일행이 웨이드의 말을 믿고 떠난 뒤, 웨이드는 술집 웨이트레스와 사랑을 나눈다. 웨이드 일당에게 속았다는 사실을 깨달은 보안관 일행은 술집으로 찾아와 웨이드를 체포한다. 보안관은 웨이드를 유마행 3시 10분 기차에 태우기로 결정하고 두 무리로 나누어 웨이드 일행을 유인하기로 한다. 댄은 처음엔 망설였지만 2백달러를 주겠다는 버터필드의 말에 웨이드의 후송을 맡는다. 댄이 돈 때문에 자신의 후송을 맡았다는 사실을 눈치챈 웨이드는 계속해서 돈으로 그를 유혹한다. 댄은 7천 달러를 주겠다는 웨이드의 말에 망설인다. 기차역 호텔에 진을 치고 기차를 기다리는 댄 일행. 한편 웨이드의 부하들은 웨이드의 거처를 파악하고 호텔로 몰려오는데...

When Ward, with the help of Arnold and his daughter Sally, arranges for a new driller to be brought in, the replacement man is killed and one of Dawson's men takes his place.
