타일러는 곤충학자이다. 그런 그가 곤충채집을 하던중, 그가 한번도 본적이 없는 이상한 곤충의 잔유물을 발견하게 된다. 이와 발맞추어 연속되는 살인사건이 발생하고, 마치 흡혈귀에게라도 당한 것처럼 피해자들은 온몸에 흡판자국과 함께 피를 빨려서 죽게 된다. 경찰이 백방으로 수사를 해보지만 실마리는 잡히지를 않고, 타일러는 자신이 발견한 곤충이 거대한 흡혈 진드기라는 사실을 경찰에 알리지만, 경찰은 믿지를 않는다. 이 흡혈 진드기는 마리화나의 성장촉진제로 쓰이는 스테로이드가 실수로 벼룩 알에 떨어지면서 비정상적으로 커진 벼룩이 피를 가진 동물에게 무차별 공격을 하는 것이었다. 타일러와 그의 친구들은 흡혈 진드기에게 쫓기지만 용기와 재치를 발휘하여 헤쳐나간다.
