호주 한적한 동네에 살고 있는 평범한 남자 대런. 동네 바비큐 용품 판매원인 그의 취미는 주말에 친구들과 이웃들을 초대해 바비큐를 해주는 일이다. 그는 호주에 처음으로 바비큐를 들여온 사람이 캡틴 제임스 쿡이고, 자신이 그의 후손이라고 굳게 믿고 있다. 특히 제임스 쿡의 (것이라 믿는) 럼주통 바비큐 그릴은 그의 큰 자랑이다. 여느 때처럼 이웃들에게 바비큐를 해주던 어느 주말, 이웃들은 덜 익은 새우로 인해 단체식중독에 걸리게 된다. 이 일이 텔레비전에 방송되며 그는 호주 최고의 ’근육바보’로 유명해진다. 그러던 중 동네에서 국제바비큐대회가 열리자 대런은 등 떠밀려 지역 대표로 출전하게 되면서, 베일에 가린 미스터리 셰프 ‘도살자’에게 특훈까지 받게 된다. 한편, 12살 아들 제이든은 아빠가 캡틴 제임스 쿡의 자손이라는 연결고리를 찾기 위해 고군분투한다. ‘쿡’ 가족의 자존심을 걸고 각자의 싸움을 하게 된 이들은 과연 가족의 명예를 지켜낼 수 있을까?
