1987년 스코틀랜드 글래스고우시의 버스운전수 조지 레녹스는 자신의 버스에 무임승차한 칼라라는 여자를 알게 된다. 거리의 무용수로 난민수용소에 살고 있는 칼라는 무정부 상태로 친 소노사파와 민족해방군, 반정부군이 대립하고 있는 니카라과의 민족해방군 위문공연단의 무용수다. 그녀는 반정부군 게릴라의 습격으로 남자친구가 반군에게 무참히 짓밟히는 현장을 목격하고 그 충격을 이기지 못해 영국으로 도망쳐 나왔다. 두 사람이 가까워지던중 칼라의 자살기도가 있게 되고, 그 원인이 옛 애인 안토니오임을 알게된 조지는 안토니오를 찾으러 칼라와 니카라과로 간다.

1994년 영국 리버플의 한 시영공립 주택에서 한 노인이 사망한다. 그날 밤 유품 정리를 하던 손녀는 낡은 가방 하나를 발견하다. 그 안에는 오래된 편지 뭉치, 스페인 내란에 관한 신문 스크랩, 청춘의 할아버지와 동지들이 무장한 채 찍은 1936년 바르셀로나라는 문구가 씌어진 옛 사진들과 붉은 리본을 말라붙은 흙으로 싸둔 손수건, 그리고 스페인 공화파를 옹호하며 모임을 선전하는 삐라가 들어 있다. 1936년 리버플의 모임에서 한 스페인 시민군이 노동자들의 참전을 독려하는 열정적인 연설을 한다. 그는 프랑코의 스페인 공화정부에 반란상황을 설명하면서 유럽의 민주정부들의 도움을 거부하고 국제 노동자들의 참여를 호소한다. 그의 호소에 감동을 받은 데이빗은 실업수당을 받고 배고픈 시위를 하는 영국에서의 생활에 염증을 느끼고 스페인으로 가기로 한다.

인권 운동가인 미국인 변호사 폴 설리반이 정보원을 만나러 갔다가 벨파스트 근교에서 무참히 살해당한다. 수사를 맡게 된 케리건이 도착하고, 사건을 파헤칠수록 케리건은 폴의 죽음 이면에 도사린 커다란 정치적 음모와 맞닥뜨린다. 영국연방으로 남은 북아일랜드 내에서의 테러가 심각하던 때를 배경으로, 북아일랜드, 아일랜드, 영국 간의 복잡한 관계와 정치역학적 문제를 어느 인권 변호사의 죽음을 통해 스릴러 형식으로 다루었다. 켄 로치의 담담한 연출은 오히려 더욱 묵직한 울림을 남긴다. (2017년 영화의 전당 - 아일랜드 영화 특별전)

런던에 거주하는 19세 소녀 재니스(샌디 랫클리프 분)는 정신분열 증세에 시달리고 있다. 설상가상으로 10대 소녀가 감당하기엔 어려운 상황 - 즉, 임신을 한 상태. 결국 부모의 손에 이끌려 정신과 상담을 받게 된다. 담당의사는 재니스를 비롯해서 그녀의 가족들과도 면담을 하게 되고, 그녀를 막다른 골목으로 몰아넣은 이들이 다름 아닌 그녀의 부모라는 사실을 밝혀낸다. 사실 재니스의 어머니는 청교도이자 완고하고 냉담한 여자이며 아버지는 명예와 의무에 목숨을 거는 가부장적인 남자이다. 이들 부모는 시계처럼 정해진 삶을 가장 가치 있는 것이라 믿고 자식에게 그것을 강요하며 자신들은 훌륭한 부모임을 자부한다는 데 더 큰 문제가 있다. 이들은 재니스에게 낙태를 종용하고 정신과 치료시설로 강제로 보내지만 증상은 점점 악화되는데... On the planet Dido, the Doctor, Ian and Barbara meet two survivors from a crashed spaceship who are terrorised by the monster Koquillion.

The TARDIS arrives in a desolate future London, where the Doctor discovers his old enemies the Daleks have taken control of Earth.
