병원에 심한 상처를 입은 스티븐이라는 청년이 실려 온다. 그런데 스티븐은 촬영팀을 불러 자신의 일거수일투족을 영상에 담아달라는 이상한 부탁을 한다. 스티븐의 여자친구인 메그는 남자친구에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 알아내기 위해 촬영팀의 감독과 함께 스티븐이 논문을 준비하며 남긴 자료를 하나씩 살펴보며 스티븐의 발자취를 좇는다. 스티븐이 조사하던 인물은 수십 년 전 멕시코와 무역을 하며 부를 쌓은 무역상 발마세다였는데 이 사람은 32살이 되던 해 갑자기 행방불명됐다. 스티븐의 오래된 8mm 영상을 보고 발마세다가 악마 숭배자였다는 사실을 알아낸 두 사람은 그 후 함께 악마 숭배 의식에 참여했던 세 사람에 관해 조사하는데 놀랍게도 전원 사망한 상태였다. 스티븐의 상처는 점점 더 악화되고 정신착란 증세까지 보이자 기독교에서 명망높은 트렌틴 신부까지 돕겠다고 나서지만 뾰족한 방법이 없다. 그러던 중 스티븐이 마지막으로 접촉한 사람이 악마 숭배 모임의 마지막 생존자인 모건이라는 사실을 알게 된 메그와 트렌틴 신부는 모건과 직접 만나 진실을 파헤치기로 하는데...
