1989년 조용한 여름밤, 말 못 하는 12살 소년 딜런 제이콥스는 엄마 미셸이 흐느껴 우는 소리를 듣는다. 소리가 들리는 부엌으로 간 딜런은 엄마가 권총으로 자살하는 모습을 바라보게 된다. 딜런은 엄마의 자살을 막지 못한 것이 말을 하지 못하는 자신의 탓이라 생각하며 슬픔과 절망감으로 괴로워한다. 그 해 가을, 딜런은 아빠 마이클과 함께 버뱅크의 주택으로 이사한다. 딜런은 집의 어느 방에서 오래된 거울과 '그림자의 책(Book of Shadows)이라는 제목의 낡은 책을 발견한다. 그림자의 책에는 23시에 촛불을 켜고 피를 뿌린 후 거울을 통해 자신의 모습을 보면서 소원을 빌면 정령 진(Djinn)이 24시까지 살아남는 자의 소원을 들어준다고 기록되어 있다. 딜런은 소원이 이루어지는 대신 영혼을 잃을지도 모른다고 경고하는 문구를 바라본다. 어느 날 저녁, 아빠 마이클이 라디오 프로그램 진행을 위해 집을 비운다. 딜런은 의식에 필요한 유물, 시계, 촛불, 거울을 준비하고 그림자의 책에 기록된 대로 주문을 외운 뒤 목소리를 달라고 소원을 빈다. 얼마 후, 책 속에서 검은 연기 형태의 정령이 나타나고 정령은 감옥에서 탈출한 후 교통사고로 죽은 악질 범죄자 노먼 다니엘스의 모습으로 변한다. 딜런은 쫓아오는 진을 피해 달아나기 위해 유리창을 깨려 하지만 파손된 창문은 원래대로 복원되고 집에서의 탈출은 불가능하다는 것을 깨닫는다. 그 후 딜런은 인간 세상의 법칙에 따라 정령이 죽은 인간의 모습으로 나타나고 24시 이후에 촛불을 꺼야 진을 책 속으로 쫓아 버릴 수 있다는 사실을 알게 되는데...
