항상 화난 얼굴로 사고만 치고 다니는 콜린 스미스(톰 커트니 분)는 남편을 병으로 잃자마자 바로 딴 남자와 살림을 차리는 어머니를 무척 미워한다. 그러던 어느 날, 빵집을 털다가 체포되어 소년원에 간 그는 교도소장(마이클 레드그레이브 분)의 눈에 띄어서 장거리 주자가 된다. 소년원의 위상을 높이기 위한 교도소장은 콜린이 '크로스 컨트리' 레이스에 참가해 우승할 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않는다. 한편 콜린은 매일 아침 달리기 연습을 하며 자신이 미워하던 어머니와 소년원에 들어오게 된 일 등을 생각하는데...
