갖가지 종교에 심취한 엄마와 함께 살고 있는 어린 ‘아이(이토 사이리)’는 종교에 광적으로 빠져 있는 엄마를 떠나 종교 집단에 보내진다. 우여곡절 끝에 7년만에 집으로 돌아오지만 엄마는 여전히 무관심하고, ‘아이’는 어떤 곳에도 정착하지 못한 채 어둠의 세계로 빠져든다. 한편, ‘아이’와 같은 반 남학생 ‘료타(스가 켄타)’는 폭력과 범죄에 노출된 불량 청소년으로 자신과 비슷한 처지에 놓인 ‘아이’에게 자꾸만 관심이 간다. 그저 평범한 삶과 가족을 원하는 아이와 료타는 함께 그들을 받아줄 곳을 찾아 나서기 시작하는데…
