미술 거래상이며 뉴욕 5번가에 사는 키트리지 부부는 우연히 폴(Paul: 윌 스미스 분)을 알게 된다. 아이들의 대학 동기이며 유명한 배우 시드니 포이티어의 아들이라는 폴은 풍부한 경험을 가진 상류층 청년이었다. 뛰어난 재담꾼이자 일류요리사 빰치는 요리 실력을 지닌 폴에게 키트리지 부부는 금세 호감을 갖게 되고, 폴은 그들의 친구가 되어 그들 집에 머무르며 지낸다. 그러나 곧, 폴은 호모이자 사기꾼임이 밝혀진다. 더 놀라운건 폴에게 당한 사람들이 5번가에 더 있었다는 것이다. 그러자 어느 누구도 폴이 어디 사는 누구인지, 지금 어디 있는지 아무도 알 수 없었다. 사교 모임에서 키트리지 부부는 폴의 얘기를 하면서 인기가 높아지고 사업상 만나는 사람들도 그 얘기를 무척 재미있어 하지만 여전히 그의 정체는 수수께끼였는데...
