After young film writer Leo has his latest screenplay rejected he retreats to his summer home on an island, on his way he meets the flight attendant Virgo and a romance soon blossoms.

영화감독 마르틴의 촬영장에 스승 파울이 찾아와 지옥과 같은 세상을 다룬 영화 아이디어를 주고 마르틴은 작가인 토마스와 그의 부인 소피에게 이를 들려준다. 토마스는 창녀인 비르이타를 인터뷰하고 수개월 후 소피가 자신을 떠나자 비르이타를 만나기 시작한다. 비르이타는 약혼자 페테르의 아이를 낳지만 주위 사람들에 의해 아이를 버리게 된다. 토마스는 비르이타를 사랑하며 도와주겠다고 하지만 그녀는 페테르에게 돌아가겠다고 한다. 그녀는 고통스러운 삶을 견디지 못하고 자살을 한다.

Because of an accident at a military drill the recruit Bengt loses his eyesight and becomes blind. He gets to live with relatives in the countryside and meets the young Ingrid. She falls in love with him but Bengt's bitterness also makes him blind to her attentions.
