1954년대의 미국 볼티모어, 미국 역사상 처음으로 흑인들을 백인학교에서 법적으로 받아주기로 한 시기. 실비아의 이름을 가진 매우 당당하고 예쁜 여학생이 첫 흑인 학생으로 입학한다.이러한 여학생에게 벤은 이성적인 감정을 느끼고 양가 부모의 반대가 있음에도 불구하고 둘은 사랑을 키우게 된다.각자의 자라온 환경, 종교, 가족 역사에 대해서 얘기 하면서 서로에 대한 이해는 물론 둘은 자신에 대해서 몰랐던 점도 이해하고 생각을 더 깊게하게 된다.그런 과정에 실비아는 벤에게 흑인들만 가는 흑인 가수 콘서트표를 주고 벤은 자신의 친구와 가서 처음으로 `소수`가 된 기분을 맛보게 된다. 벤과 실비아가 게속 사귀면서 많은 장애물을 맞게되는 도중 벤의 형인 반은 엘리트 가족인 출신인 더비를 보고 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 그러나 반이 유태인이고 신분차이가 있다는 사실이 알려지자 반은 주위에서 비웃음의 대상이 된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 반은 더비의 남자 친구인 트레이와 친하게 지내고 관계가 밀접하게 되는데...
