In 1825, English peer Lord John Morgan is cast adrift in the American West. 알 카포네(제이슨 로바즈 분)가 1920년대 당시 시카고의 라이벌 조직이었던 조지 벅스 모렌을 암살하기 위해 그의 밀주 공급 본부를 습격하도록 지시를 내리자 '기관총'이란 닉네임을 가진 맥건이 믿을 수 있는 단원들을 모아 습격을 계획하고 실행케 한다. 맥건의 부하들은 훔친 경찰 유니폼을 입고 경찰차를 탄 채 모렌의 본부인 차고를 습격해서 벅스 모렌으로 보이는 사람을 쏴 죽이고 안에 있던 7명의 조직원들마저 모두 쏴 죽이고 도망친다. 곧이어 진짜 경찰들이 도착한 후 총상에도 불구하고 유일하게 살아 남은 프랭크 구젠버그를 발견하고 습격자들이 누구인지 캐묻지만 벅스 모렌이 관련되는 것을 우려한 프랭크는 끝까지 습격자들을 밝히지 않고 죽고 만다. 사실 알 카포네의 부하들이 벅스로 알고 죽인 사람은 다른 사람이었지만 어쨌든 프랭크의 죽음으로 알 카포네의 '발렌타인 데이 습격'은 완벽한 승리로 끝난다. 알 카포네는 플로리다에서 편하게 휴가를 즐기고 맥건 역시 여자 친구인 루이즈와 호텔에 투숙하며 방탕한 생활을 계속한다. 경찰과 신문, 그리고 시카고 사람들 모두 알카포네가 범인이란 사실을 알지만 증거를 찾아내지 못하고 오히려 알 카포네는 전세계적으로 유명한 갱스터로 이름을 날리게 된다. 하지만 결국 1931년 탈세 혐의로 11년형을 선고 받은 후 화려했던 알 카포네의 갱스터 인생은 내리막길로 접어들게 된다.
