미국 애리조나에 거대한 운석이 떨어진다. 국방성 소속 과학자였지만 불미한 사건으로 지금은 지방 학교의 생물학 교수로 살고 있는 아이라 케인(데이비드 두코브니)은 동료 지질학 교수 해리 블록(올랜도 존스)와 함께 이 운석을 조사하던 중 운석 속에 생물체가 급격한 속도로 진화하고 있음을 발견한다. 이 발견을 통해 재기를 노리던 아이라는 전에 함께 일했던 우드먼 장군과 새로운 정부 소속 과학자 앨리슨 리드(줄리앤 무어)와 부딪치고, 급기야 운석 조사팀에서 제외된다. 이 외계 생물체는 기하 급수적으로 늘어가고 지구의 환경에도 서서히 적응해가면서 서서히 사람들에게 공격을 가하기 시작한다.
