43-year-old business woman, Harumi. She lives with her husband, after their only daughter, Michiyo, married two years ago. One day, Michiyo is killed by her husband, Koji. Koji is sentenced to death. Harumi initially agreed with it, but starts thinking to stop the death penalty of Koji. Although her husband and all her family are strongly opposed to her decision, she keeps trying to stop the death penalty with the help of Koji's lawyer. Harumi had a secret of Michiyo that she doesn't want to tell anyone.

The world's first human-android acting duo, called Android Theater Project, is the collaborative brainchild of noted Japanese playwright Oriza Hirata and the leading robotics scientist Hiroshi Ishiguro. "Sayonara" is a remakable android play and has been adapted to feature film by the acclaimed filmmaker Koji Fukada (Hospitalité, Au revoir l’été). In this film project the setting of the story is largely expanded, depicting time and space in a way which can only be achieved in film, examining life and death though the communication between dying human and immortal android.
일본의 아이돌 그룹 모모이로 클로버Z 멤버들이 출연한 이 영화는 지방 소도시의 한 연극부를 무대로 펼쳐지는 청춘 스토리이다. 동경에서 내려온 신임교사와 후지가오카 고등학교 학생 5명이 고교 전국 연극대회를 위해 전력으로 연기에 몰두한다는 내용인데, 텔레비전 드라마와 같은 평이한 구성인데도 극중 인물들처럼 전력으로 투구하는 감독 이하 스태프들의 열정이 화면에 배어나올 정도로 물 흐르듯이 사건이 전개된다. 청춘기의 좌고우면하지 않는 순정, 믿어지지 않을 만큼 성실한 극중 인물들의 상호배려 정신이 선의의 결집으로서의 예술창작 과정에 진심으로 호응하고 싶게 만든다. 3.11 대지진이 평범한 일본인의 정신과 일상에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 알리는 작품. 도쿄의 자그마한 아파트. 이웃해 살고 있는 사에코와 유카코는 대지진 이후 모든 것이 불안하다. 남편에게 이혼을 요구받은 사에코는 딸이 방사능에 노출될까 걱정하고, 유카코 역시 방사능의 두려움 때문에 남편과 이사를 가자고 조른다.
