World War II. Lieutenant Bogdan Mayer is tasked with delivering a sample of valuable metal alloy from Warsaw to London.

After Poland won freedom from of its long overlordship by Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, it took a further four years for its National Assembly to elect Gabriel Narutowicz as its first president. Narutowicz was a professor who until his election had been living in Switzerland. Those were chaotic times, and shortly after his election, he was assassinated by right-wing fanatics. This epic Polish film chronicles the circumstances of Narutowicz's election and assassination.

A bunch of unemployed and unqualified workers are hired to unload a few railway wagons. Because of the low wages, the manager needs to encourage the workers in some other way.

A biology professor, Adam, after several dizzy spells, enters a hospital for observation. He is a loner and a serious-minded man, who dislikes any display of emotions. He spends three months in the hospital while being tested. After observing patients and hospital routines around him from a distance, he learns that he will need a kidney transplant. Meanwhile his personal and professional life is falling apart: he refuses his wife's offer to donate the kidney for him; the scientific problem he was working on has been solved elsewhere. In the end Adam cracks under the prolonged pressure, waiting for the sound of an ambulance bringing a moribund patient whose kidney may be used for the transplant.

Jaruga, the head of the local Security Office, cannot liquidate the "Boruta" unit. Most likely, he has his man in the UB. In order to unmask him and liquidate the unit, Albert, an employee of the UB, acting in complete conspiracy, arrives.

The film is set in the summer of 1944. The Home Army branch operating in the Sądecki region is decimated by the Germans during an attempt to take over the drop of weapons and ammunition from England. About 20 soldiers break out of the encirclement, including the commander - Major "Dziadek" - and his deputy - Captain Stańczyk. Partisans are trying to get to the ruins of a nearby castle; This is where the last ammunition container was supposed to fall. The commander sends two men to scout. Only one returns, and that is without ammo.

WWII. Zyga, one of the Resistance soldiers in Kraków (Poland), is arrested by Gestapo. Soon later with new arrestings comes out that Germans must have received some new informations. Zyga is suspected to become an informator.

During the war, a nurse finds footwear belonging to a Soviet soldier. The discovery haunts her.

The former owner, a German, shows up on a farm belonging to the Poles settled there.

On the last day of the war, a Polish soldier whose family was murdered meets his German enemy.

The cook prepares the soldier's favourite dish. The soldiers learn that the products come from the Majdanek camp.

A friendship grows between two prisoners when they haul a cart with provisions during the evacuation of a concentration camp. However, their friendship ends tragically.

A young man, Kuba, is returning from the army. At home, an image of misery and despair remains: the father is seriously ill, and the mother has become emotionally attached to the man who exploits her and intends to take over the farm. After the death of his father, the young man guards the farm, but his girlfriend leaves him. Unable to bear the atmosphere of envy and resentment, Kuba leaves for the city.

The miners of one of the mines in Zagłębie Dąbrowskie receive news about the planned layoffs. The miners decide to organize a strike. One of the local MPs is trying to prevent this from happening. The French mine owner makes a dangerous decision - he orders the miners to work in an area at risk of fire. An explosion occurs unexpectedly. The miners lynch Coeur, and their demonstration, in which they carry the bodies of the victims of the crash, is brutally suppressed by the police.
