덴마크의 왕자 햄릿은 부왕이 서거한지 한달도 안돼서 어머니인 게르트루드 왕비가, 왕좌를 차지한 작은 아버지 클라우디우스 왕과 결혼하자 어머니에 대한 심한 배신감으로 괴로워 한다. 그런 햄릿 앞에 부왕의 유령이 나타나, 동생인 클라우디우스에게 살해됐음을 밝히면서 복수를 부탁한다. 아버지의 원수를 갚기위해서 작은 아버지를 살해해야 하는 의무감과 자신의 우유부단한 무력감, 그리고 어머니에 대한 사랑 사이에서 갈등을 겪는 햄릿은 결국 정신 착란 증세까지 보이게 된다. 왕의 고문관 폴로니우스는 햄릿의 그런 방황이 자신의 딸 오필리아와의 이루지 못하는 사랑 때문이라 생각한다. 공연을 하기위해 성에 들어온 집시들에게 아버지의 살해 사건을 연극으로 꾸며 재현하게 만든 햄릿은, 그 연극을 보고 크게 당황하는 클라우디우스왕을 보고 더욱 의심을 굳힌다. 어느날, 왕의 침실에서 어머니 게르트루드 왕비를 비난하고 또 설득하던 햄릿은, 이를 엿듣던 폴로니우스를 클라우디우스왕으로 오인하고 죽이고 만다. 이 사건을 계기로 클라우디우스왕은, 아무도 모르게 햄릿을 죽여버릴 음모를 세우고 그를 영국으로 추방한다. 그러나 그 계획을 눈치챈 햄릿은 위험에서 벗어나 무사히 덴마크로 다시 돌아온다. 한편, 사랑하는 사람의 칼에 아버지를 잃은 오필리아는 절망감에 빠져 미치더니 결국 스스로 목숨을 끊고만다. 오필리아의 죽음에 충격을 받은 햄릿. 오필리아의 오빠 라에르테스는 아버지와 동생의 죽음에 대한 분노로 햄릿에게 결투를 청한다. 클라우디우스왕은 또다시 그 간교한 계략으로 라에르테스의 칼끝에 독을 묻히고, 그래도 햄릿이 이길 경우를 대비해서 결투 후 승자가 마시게될 술에도 독을 탄다. 왕과 왕비, 모든 신하들이 모인 자리에서 숙명의 결전을 벌이는 햄릿과 라에르테스. 라에르테스는 자신의 칼에 깊게 찔린다.
