엄마를 잃고 슬픔에 빠져 지내던 미사는 아빠가 새 엄마를 얻자 배신감을 느낀다. 여름 방학 동안 외할머니가 사는 시골에서 지내기로 한 미사. 미사는 그곳에서 어미 늑대와 새끼 늑대들을 만나 우정을 쌓게 된다. 그러나 어미 늑대가 새끼 늑대들의 먹이를 위해 순록을 죽이는 일이 발생하고 마을 사람들은 밀렵꾼을 고용해 늑대 사냥을 시작한다. 마침내 어미 늑대는 밀렵꾼의 총에 맞아 죽고 이를 알게된 미사는 어미 늑대의 죽음을 슬퍼하며 자신이 새끼 늑대들을 돌봐 주기로 마음먹는다. 미사는 친구, 구스타프의 도움으로 밀렵꾼들을 피해 새끼 늑대들을 데리고 이승을 떠난 사람이 산다는 호수를 찾아가고 그곳에서 새끼 늑대들을 늑대 아빠에게 건네준다. 새끼 늑대들을 무사히 살린 후 집으로 돌아온 미사는 마침내 아빠와 화해하고 엄마를 잃은 상실감을 극복한다.
