병부상서 유필상은 북방변경의 국방을 강화하기 위해 무예계인사를 구하고 있었는바 강성운은 아로환이라는 호인의 무예가 출중한 것을 보고 유필상에게 추천한다. 유필상이 아로환의 무예를 시험하는 자리에서 아로환이 유필상을 살해하고 도망치니 강성운이 억울하게 누명을 뒤집어쓴다. 도주한 강성운은 누명을 씻기 위해 아로환을 추적한다. 그의 뒤에는 형부별감 오괄이 강성운을 체포하려 뒤쫓고, 서북부병사 한준은 오괄을 돕기 위해 무관중의 제일의 실력자 장립을 파견하여 강성운의 처단을 독촉한다. 장립은 강성운이 누명을 쓰고 있다는 사실을 알고 은근히 강에게 협조한다. 천신마고 끝에 찾아간 아로환의 집에서 아로환이 칼에 맞고 죽어가는 것을 목격한다. 아로환의 유언으로 밝혀진 음모의 주동자는 한준이었다. 강성운과 장립은 병부옥패로 한준을 체포한다.
