그리스 국경 근처의 외딴 불가리아 마을에 수력 발전소를 건설하기 위해 고용된 건설 노동자 마인하르트는 작업이 순조롭게 되지 않자 지루해지기 시작한다. 몇 가지 일로 지역 주민들과 노동자들의 사이가 나빠지기 시작하던 중 마인하르트는 백마를 발견하고, 이 말을 타고 마을로 들어가 주민들과 대화를 나누게 된다.
