때는 제 2차 세계 대전. 태평양을 항해하는 수송선박에서 전쟁아닌 전쟁이 벌어진다. 선원 중 한사람인 로버츠 씨는 항상 문제를 일으키는 사람으로 전쟁 중에도 아무 일도 하려고 들지 않는 선원들이나 선장들에게 불만이 많은 나머지 무슨 일이라도 터트리려고 안달이 나있다. 그와 마음을 같이 하는 닥이나 펄버 역시 마찬가지. 그들이 가장 싫어하는 사람은 바로 선장인데 장사속에만 눈이 어둡고 단조로운 생활을 하는 그가 그들에게는 눈엣 가시일수 밖에는 없는 것. 어느날 엘리지움 섬으로 선박 이동 명령이 떨어지고, 그때부터 선장과 로버츠를 위시한 다른 선원들간의 갈등은 점점 더 심해지는데.
