우울증과 신경쇠약 치료경험이 있는 한 남자가(로버트) 퇴근길에 우연히 본 어떤 여자의(제니) 집을 노상 스토킹하듯 훔쳐본다. 그러다 여자에게 들켜 서로 대화를 나누게되는데 남자는 뉴욕의 대기업 기술자였다가 펜실베이니아로 이사와 유수한 항공기회사의 설계기술자로 있다. 그는 부인과 이혼소송중이다. 제니는 며칠후 로버트의 회사로 찾아온다. 제니는 로버트의 우울증을 자기가 고쳐줄수 있다며 이렇게 만나게 된것은 운명이라 말한다. 아침에 로버트의 집앞에서 기다리기도 하고 반강제로 등산도 함께하며 이번엔 제니가 로버트를 스토킹하듯 한다. 둘의 만남을 목격한 제니의 전 남자친구가 행패를 부리고 로버트가 제니를 멀리하려하자 제니는 정말 로버트를 스토킹한다. 로버트가 결별을 통보하지만 제니는 눈물로 호소한다. 그 와중에 제니의 남친이 로버트를 찾아와 싸우다가 강가에서 행방불명되는데...
