일탈에 대한 호기심이 빠져나올 수 없는 파멸의 길로 이어지는 이야기. 마이클(제임스 스페이더)는 유능한 증권분석가로 사회적 출세는 이루었지만 그에겐 일상으로부터 탈출하고자하는 욕망이 있다. 이 욕망은 그가 한 술집에서 알렉스(로브 로)를 만나면서 분출되기 시작한다. 규범에 얽매이지 않은 채 마음내키는 대로 살아가는 알렉스. 그는 마이클의 집에 같이 머물면서 술취한 마이클과 함께 편의점까지 털기도 하고, 마이클의 회사경쟁자를 찾아가 폭행을 가하는 등 조금씩 정상수위를 넘는 행동을 한다. 이에 뭔가 불안함을 느낀 마이클은 알렉스에게 떠나 줄 것을 부탁한다. 하지만 알렉스는 악마적 본색을 드러내며 보란듯이 마이클 집의 물건들을 모조리 없애버린다. 끝내는 클럽에서 만난 여자 클레어를 살해해 마이클의 집에 시체를 남겨놓는 짓까지 한다. 공포의 도가니에 빠져들게 된 마이클은 알렉스를 유인하여 그의 자백을 몰래 녹음한 뒤 그를 살해하고 자수한다.
