탐정 펠루다는 바라나시에서 휴가를 보낸다. 그러나 가네쉬(코끼리 신) 황금상 도난사건이 일어나고, 펠루다는 조사에 착수한다. 펠루다는 무자비한 무역상, 칼잡이, 어린 소년 등 여러 용의자를 만나지만 누구 하나 진실을 말하는 이는 없다.
