대학 교수인 조지와 그의 아내 마사는 파티에 갔다가 한밤중이 다 되어서 집에 돌아온다. 다혈질의 마사는 이날도 여지없이 조지와 가벼운 입씨름을 벌이고 새로 부임해온 강사 닉과 그의 아내 허니를 초대해 술자리를 갖는다. 조지는 피곤한 몸으로 술자리를 함께 하고, 조지와 마사의 쉴 새 없는 말다툼에 닉과 허니는 당황스럽기만 하다. 밤이 깊어 가고 술기운이 돌면서 이들 부부의 말싸움은 점차 위험 수위에 이르게 되고, 닉과 허니 역시 어쩔 수 없이 이들 부부의 싸움에 말려들게 되면서 상황은 점입가경으로 치닫게 되는데...
미국 극작가 에드워드 올비의 작품을 각색한 마이크 니콜스 감독의 감독 데뷔작. 니콜스는 당시 영화상에서 금기시 되었던 욕과 외설적인 표현을 과감히 사용하여 화제가 되기도 하였다. 출연 당시 실제 금술 좋은 부부 사이였던 리처드 버튼과 엘리자베스 테일러가 자학적으로 퇴행해가는 부부 역을 맡아 서로를 향해 독설적인 말을 사정없이 퍼붓는다. 테일러는 이 영화로 미모만 부각되던 기존의 이미지에서 탈피해 연기력을 인정받고 아카데미 여우주연상을 거머쥐기도 한다. 이 영화는 여우주연상 비롯해 여우조연상, 미술상, 촬영상, 의상상 등 5개 부문을 수상했다.

In this light-hearted musical, an early color film, a successful actress tires of the bustle and hustle of her tawdry life and settles down to what she thinks is the blissful mundaneness of married life. Unfortunately, the actual drudgery of wifedom takes her by surprise and domestic turmoil ensues.
Mammy features Al Jolson as the star of a travelling minstrel show, appearing in a small Southern town. Jolson falls in love with an actress in the troupe (Lois Moran), but she loves another. One of Jolson's fellow minstrels (Lowell Sherman) is shot backstage, and it is assumed thanks to several plot convolutions that Jolson is guilty of the deed.
Vitaphone production reels #2471-2478; third Warner Bros. feature film - the first being The Jazz Singer and the second Tenderloin - to include talking sequences, along with the by now usual Vitaphone musical score and sound effects. A copy of this film survives at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., but the sound disks are lost.
