맨해튼에 사는 루시(일라나 글레이저)와 아드리안(저스틴 서룩스)은 남부러울 것 없는 행복한 부부다. 그들에게 다 갖고 싶은 것이 있다면 아이를 갖는 것이다. 2년 이상 임신을 시도해왔으나 실패하고 이젠 불임계의 거물인 존 힌들(피어스 브로스넌) 박사를 찾기로 한다. 재건 외과 의사인 아드리안과 의대 선후배 사이로 절친한 관계다. 힌들 박사는 아드리안 부부의 임신을 자신하고 루시도 편한 마음으로 병원을 찾는다. 결국 박사의 체외 임신과 자궁 내 임신을 혼용한 새로운 방식으로 임신에 성공한다. 마케팅 분야에서 일하고 있는 루시는 회사에서도 대형 프로젝트를 맡는 등 승승장구하고 있다. 그런데 초음파 검사를 한 결과 남아 2명과 여아 1명의 세쌍둥이로 밝혀진다. 힌들 박사는 건강한 임신과 출산을 보장하기 위해 루시 부부에게 선택적 감소를 제안한다. 모두 낳는 것은 위험하니 성공적인 출산을 위해 낳을 아기를 선택하라는 것이다. 박사는 쌍둥이 남아를 권하는데 루시는 딸 하나를 원한다. 루시는 쌍둥이를 키우다가는 회사에서 자신의 입지가 흔들릴까 두려워하고 있다. 결국 부부는 루시의 주장을 받아들여 여자 아기를 갖기로 결정한다. 루시는 임산부 그룹에 가입하여 체외 수정(IVF)을 통하여 임신한 코겐과 친구가 된다. 또한 잡지를 통해 영혼의 조산사로 알려진 그레이스 싱글턴(소피아 부시)에게 자신도 모르게 매료되는데...
