흉부외과 의사인 리차드 워커 박사(해리슨 포드 분)는 20년전 파리에서 자신의 아내(베티 버클리 분)를 처음 만나 사랑에 빠져 결혼했다. 의학회의 참석차 다시 파리를 찾아 호텔에서 샤워를 하는데 아내가 이상한 전화를 받고 사라진다. 샤워 후 아내가 없어진 것을 알게된 워커는 아내를 찾아나서지만 찾을 수 없고 경찰과 호텔 지배인을 만나보지만 별 소득이 없다. 호텔로 다시 돌아온 워커는 자신의 방이 엉망이 된것을 보고 놀란다. 그는 방안에 떨어져 있는 성냥갑을 찾아내고 그 위에 적힌 나이트 클럽을 찾아가 미쉘(엠마뉴엘 세이그너 분)이라는 여자를 만나 아내가 없어진 이유가 바뀐 가방 때문임을 알게 된다. 워커가 바뀐 가방을 찾아오면서 국제적인 산업스파이 조직에 쫓기게 되는데.

1960년대 체코 슬로바키아의 외과 의사인 토마스(대니얼 데이 루이스)는 바람둥이다. 병원에서 간호사와도 섹스를 하는 섹스 중독증에 가까운 인간이다. 그에게는 사비나(레나 올린)라는 멋진 애인이 있지만, 다른 여자와의 관계도 포기하지 않는다. 어느날 시골에 갔다가 그 곳의 식당 종업원으로 일하는 테레사(줄리엣 비노시)와 하룻밤 보낸다. 그후 테레사가 그를 찾아와 함께 산다. '프라하의 봄'이라고 불리는 1968년 소련의 체코 침공으로 사비나는 토마스에게 언제든 도움이 필요하면 청하라고 하며 혼자 피난을 떠난다. 한편 테레사는 카메라를 들고 '프라하의 봄'을 정면으로 찍는다.

The film follows the adventures of Baron Munchausen, who is prompted to travel to the moon by his cousin Sirius, an astrologer convinced that it is inhabited by an ancient race called the Selenites. The Selentites incidentally possess the secret of immortality. 르누아르가 자신의 후기작 중에서 가장 아끼는 작품. 물렝 루즈의 설립자 앙리 지들러의 삶을 바탕으로 뮤직홀에 대한 경배를 바치고 있는 작품. 장 가뱅이 물렝 루즈의 지배인 당글라드 역을 맡아 오랜만에 르누아르와 함께 작업했고, 멕시코 출신의 마리아 펠릭스와 가냘픈 매력의 프랑수아즈 아르눌이 연적으로 등장한다. 전설적인 가수 에디트 피아프와 파타슈의 카메오 출연도 영화를 보는 즐거움을 더해준다. 마치 툴루즈 로트렉의 판화를 보는 듯한 선명하고 아름다운 색채 역시 결코 빼놓을 수 없는 매력이다. 사랑의 진실성과 예술의 문제를 다룬다는 점에서 "황금마차"와 비교할 만한 영화.

Mado loves Henry but is coveted by Bob Torquella, a dangerous gangster. The latter, mad with jealousy, is prepared to do everything to get rid of Henri.
