Thirty-something Hillary Burns has spent her life trying to get the approval of her parents, most specifically her judgmental mother, Meredith Burns, thus far without success. Part of that approval for Hillary is to marry the right man. That's why Hillary is so happy that she is engaged to successful lawyer Jason King, who she will bring home to meet the family for the first time at their Thanksgiving get-together weekend in a week's time. However, Hillary's life starts to fall apart when simultaneously she loses her part-time newspaper writing job when the newspaper itself folds, and Jason dumps her as he tries to focus on his career which is seemingly more important to him than Hillary. On the advice of her best friend Sophie, Hillary - who feels she can't go home without Jason, especially as her two sisters' lives seem to meet their mother's approval - decides...

작은 도시에서 경찰로 근무하는 미첼은 9살의 딸과 한창 사춘기에 접어든 십대 아들을 둔 평범한 가장이다. 늘 긴장과 위험이 함께하는 업무에 지친데다 원래 보수적이고 무뚝뚝한 성격인 그는 아이들에게도 그리 자상한 아빠가 되어주지는 못한다. 미첼의 파트너 셰인은 이혼 후 아이들의 양육비를 대는 것만도 버거운 생활을 하지만, 미첼과 가장 가까운 동료로 서로의 고민을 나눈다. 애틀랜타에서 새로 부임한 헤이스는 1년차 신참 톰슨과 파트너가 된다. 헤이스는 소도시에서 아이들을 안전하게 키우고 싶어 그곳으로 왔고, 같은 팀인 미첼, 셰인과도 가까워진다. 한편 건설 노동자였던 하비는 실직 후 일자리가 없어 좌절하던 중 우연히 미첼의 집 수리 일을 맡게 되면서 용기와 희망을 얻는다.

젊은 시절 힙합 래퍼가 꿈이었던 디제이(테렌스 하워드 분). 그는 미국 멤피스에서 창녀들(놀라:타린 매닝 분/셔그:타라지 P. 헨슨 분/렉서스:폴라 자이 파커 분)을 등쳐 먹는 포주로 살아가고 있다. 매춘 업 이외에도 아넬 바에 대마초를 팔아 부족한 돈을 조달하기도 한다. 입에 겨우 풀칠하고 사는 그의 삶은 한 마디로 밑바닥 인생이다. 무의미하고 절망적인 삶으로부터의 탈출하고자 하나 별다른 대안이 없다. 불혹의 나이에 접어들 즈음 그는 문득 자신의 참담한 위치와 삶의 위기를 깨닫는다. 그러던 어느 날, 수중에 들어온 작은 키보드가 먼저 쌓인 그의 음악에 대한 꿈을 자극한다. 마침 힙합 슈퍼스타인 스키너 블랙이 멤피스를 방문해 아넬 바에서 파티를 벌인다는 정보도 얻는다. 디제이는 스키너 블랙의 방문이 랩퍼의 꿈을 실현할 수 있는 절호의 기회라고 생각하고 학창 시절 절친한 친구이자 사운드 엔지니어인 키(안소니 앤더슨 분)의 음악에 대한 열정을 부추긴다. 디제이의 랩을 들은 키는 성공을 예감하고 디제이의 허름한 방을 녹음실로 급조, 데모 테이프 제작에 착수한다. 이 과정에 교회 뮤지션인 백인 청년 셀비(DJ 퀄스 분)가 합류하고 창녀인 놀라와 셔그도 디제이의 데모 테이프 제작에 즐겁고도 감격스러운 마음으로 참여한다. 스키너 블랙이 멤피스의 아넬 바에 도착할 즈음 디제이의 데모 테이프도 완성된다. 디제이는 떨리는 마음으로 아넬 바로 들어간다
