작은 마을에서 밤에는 모텔, 낮에는 식당을 운영하는 베스. 가족도 친구도 하나 없이 외롭고 힘들게 살아가고 있다. 어느날, 식당으로 걸어가는 길에 서핑보드를 싣고 질주하는 차를 보게 된다. 무심히 지나쳤던 그 차가 베스의 식당 앞에 도착하고, 극심한 공포와 굶주림으로 불안해 보이는 남자가 식당에 들어선다. 잭 배럿이라는 이 남자에게 아침 식사를 만들어 주고, 이런 저런 말을 걸어보는 베스. 이때 서핑보드를 실은 세 명의 남자가 도착하는데.

A struggling architect, being sued for divorce by his wife and struggling with booze and gambling, finds work remodeling a friend's strip club, the Paradise. There he meets a transsexual stripper who is bothered by accurate, but extremely violent visions of future events. The increasingly violent visions start including the architect, who doesn't believe in the prophesy. One who does however is a psychiatrist who is seeing both the stripper and the architect and is sleeping with the ex-wife. He uses the prophecies for his own financial gain. Finally the scenes from the vision move into reality amidst many plot turns.

음산함이 가득한 클라우스 정신병원. 폭우가 퍼붓는 어느 날 밤, 미모의 범죄 심리학자 카렌이 찾아온다. 범죄 심리학 분야의 실력가인 카렌은 한 연쇄살인범의 요청을 받고 그를 면담하기 위해 클라우스 병동을 방문한 것이다. 상담의 주인공은 사이먼. 면도칼로 잔인하게 목을 베는 엽기적인 연쇄살인범으로 체포되어, 정신병원에서 5년째 감금생활을 하고 있다. 사이먼을 가혹하게 다루는 건달 같은 간호사와 담당의사인 말로의 비협조적인 태도에 대한 반감을 느낀 카렌은 사이먼과의 인간적인 대화를 시도한다. 위험을 무릅쓰고 수갑도 풀어줘 가며 사이먼의 호감을 사려고 노력하는 카렌, 드디어 살인자의 입이 열리기 시작한다. 조울증 환자를 엄마로 둔 소년 사이먼은 글도 못 깨치고 내성적인 성격 때문에 학교 악동들의 놀림감이 된다. 어느 날 놈들에게 쫓기다 넘어진 그는 아스팔트 바닥에 심하게 얼굴을 긁혀 왼쪽 얼굴을 온통 차지하는 큰 상처를 얻는다. 그 사건으로 그는 동정심 많은 착한 소녀 줄리와 친구가 되지만, 상처가 깨끗이 나은 이후에도 그는 자기가 흉측한 Ugly 괴물이라는 열등감에 시달린다. 사이먼의 엄마는 그의 상태를 악화시킨다. 이혼한 아버지로부터 온 편지를, '난 흉측한 내 아들을 증오 한다'고 읽어준다. 하지만 우연히 거실에서 함께 놀던 줄리가 그 내용을 올바르게 읽어주는 것을 엄마에게 들키게 되고, 사이먼을 향한 증오와 학대는 점점 심해진다. 부자 아버지는 사랑하는 아들을 데려가고 싶어 했지만, 양육비를 타내기 위해 엄마는 사이먼을 강제로 붙잡아두고 있었던 것이다. 엄마에 대한 증오와 심한 열등감에 시달리던 사이먼은 엄마를 살해하고, 그때부터 주체할 수 없는 살인욕구에 시달리며 살인광이 된다. 엄마를 살해하면서 시작된 사이먼의 살인행각은 점점 강도를 더해가고 거의 닥치는 대로 사람을 잡아 면도칼로 목을 따는 끔찍한 살인광이 되어 결국에는 정신병동에 감금되어 있는 것이다.

A Maori warrior comes upon the aftermath of a battle to find that the only survivor is a wounded enemy soldier.
